About Nick Santoro

“l have always loved art. From film, to paint, to tattoo, and obviously, to literature. I was born in Southwest Georgia. A region dotted with small working class towns like islands in a sea of cotton and peanut fields.

My mother was a homemaaker, and my father a blue collar man his entire life. Though I geared my life towards a career in psychological healthcare, I grew to love literature and history just as much, a passion only rivalled by the arts.

Through circumstance I changed my path from academics to art when I found myself working in a tattoo studio in South Carolina, an experience that undoubtedly provided subliminal insights to the characters and stories that I write today. It was in the studio I learned that there is no stiff definition to what art is aside from open vulnerability and honest expression of the self. My first attempt at writing began at the studio, I lacked the constitution and resolve to see it through however.

Eventually, I left that industry to pursue the culinary world, falling in love with the piratesque lifestyle of hard boiled finesse. Arguably, an art form all its own. An art form of character and resolve forged by open flame and searing grease, hardness gained through long hours, stressful conditions, burns, cuts, hot tempers and strict demands. I had been both wheat and chaf at one point or another.

Being a chef took me across the Atlantic to North Wales where I now call home. Nestled within the ancient mountain ranges, all so fantastically adorned with the ruins of medieval castles, a land steeped in lore and magic and a peculiar quietness that soothes the mind almost habitually, I returned to my dream of being an author. I drew inspiration from what scared me, what the world looks like through my eyes, the people trying to survive in it, and the delecate play we each have a part in to decipher where in this place life puts us in the spectrum of heaven to hellscape.

I write characters who are real, analytical, flawed, undermined, seedy, self-interested, broken, mended, seeking, and hopelessly hopeful. I tell stories that ask to be seen more deeply, that hopefully spur you as a reader to look deeper into yourself and answer the questions that I’m raising about us, society and where we land in it all. Are we the pawns of monsters, are we fleeing them, or are we the monsters ourselves?
